Even though Daryl has always been a physically active and
strong child, we still made some lifestyle adjustments, and found more ways to keep
strengthening his core muscles. We bought six exercise balls and put them in
every classroom so that he sits on a ball rather than a chair – this helps
to work his core muscles throughout the day while at school. He had to learn
how to manage his brace – setting his alarm every time he took it off to ensure
that he put it back on two hours later, and washing the brace in the washing
machine (yes to detergent, no to softener); exercising daily – in the
morning, in the shower, in the evenings, at times with the Theraband, and swimming twice a week as well. We are so thankful that we live in such a
supportive community and people are happy to help in so many ways. The school allowed us
to put in those exercise balls in the classrooms, his high school friends learnt
to leave the ball alone (well, not really… rather, to not play with it too much, or be
too distracted by it!), and a friend agreed to give him regular swimming lessons. Indeed, the support from this community has been a tremendous blessing to our family.
