The Decision

But Daryl continues to grow, and his spine continues to curve... We knew there had to be a cut-off point when we would have to make a decision. The point when surgery would no longer be an option, but a necessity. We reached it during our visit to TAGS last April 2014. The physiotherapist, Gin Lee, said that she had done all that she could do, and it was time for us to make an appointment with Prof. Kwan Mun Keong at the University Malaya Specialist Centre in Kuala Lumpur. So, we booked the appointment for July 2, 2014. It didn’t surprise us to hear Prof. Kwan confirm that surgery was now the only course of action. Daryl’s lower spine was starting to curve to compensate the primary curve and if we did not operate soon, that lower curve would harden, and the rods would have to be extended past Daryl’s ribcage. This would greatly hamper his mobility, so it is important that we have the operation during this “golden period” – the window of time when surgery would be most effective and beneficial.

  1. YES!! indeed the golden time is very important.
I am also having the curve of 60+ before ops however due to my age and I am having more stiffer bones.. My correction is unable to achieve less than 20 cobb degree and I need to have a longer fusion..
But I am glad that with today modern spine medical technology allow me to have my curve reverse as much possible to the safest point..and return back to me many years of what I have lost.
